Meet Alexandra

Hometown: Glenns Falls, NY
Alexandra Hughes began her dance training at age four at the Dance Center of Queensbury in New York. She continued her education with the Adirondack Repertory Dance Theatre under former Joffrey Ballet Principal Dancer Pamara Perry. As well, Alexandra studied at the North Carolina School of the Arts and spent four years attending the School of American Ballet (SAB) in New York City.

While at SAB, Alexandra was chosen to perform a featured role in New York City Ballet Soloist and Resident Choreographer Justin Peck’s original work, Tales of a Chinese Zodiac, for the New York Choreographic Institute’s 10th anniversary in November 2010. Additionally, New York City Ballet Principal Dancer Robert Fairchild chose Alexandra to dance in his original ballet, Soens Folk, for the New York Choreographic Institute’s 2010 spring workshop. She also danced featured roles in SAB Workshop performances of Christopher Wheeldon’s Scènes de Ballet and George Balanchine’s Valse Fantaisie, Who Cares?, and Allegro Brillante.

Alexandra joined Philadelphia Ballet as an apprentice for our 2011/2012 season. She was promoted to corps de ballet for 2012/2013 and soloist for 2017/2018. She has created principal roles in Matthew Neenan’s At Various Points as well as Trey McIntyre’s The Accidental and has performed in numerous works, including Christopher Wheeldon’s Swan Lake, William Forsythe’s Artifact Suite, and Jerome Robbins’ N.Y. Export: Opus Jazz, along with a principal role in John Butler’s Carmina Burana. Her Balanchine repertoire includes works such as The Four Temperaments (Melancholic, Demi-Soloist), Square Dance, Serenade, and Raymonda Variations.

In May 2014, Alexandra was featured in Margo Sappington’s Under the Sun Pas de Deux during the PBS nationwide broadcast of “Philadelphia Ballet at 50.”
