FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
What should I wear to my audition?
Female-identifying students should wear a solid-colored leotard (no skirt attached), convertible full-footed pink or skin tone tights, ballet slippers, and pointe shoes (if applicable). Hair must be pulled back into a neat bun and/or secured away from the face.
Male-identifying students should wear a short-sleeved fitted solid colored t-shirt, black tights, and ballet slippers. Hair must be secured away from the face. Dance belts are required for male-identifying students.
Please do not wear jewelry or accessories. For safety reasons, fingernails should be kept at a modest length.
What should I bring to the audition?
Dancers should bring their flat and pointe shoes, a water bottle, and other provisions such as a snack, extra tights, hair ties, etc.
What can I expect the audition class to include?
Audition classes are run as typical ballet technique classes. Audition classes will consist of barre, center, across-the-floor, and pointework at the discretion of the instructor.
How long is the audition class?
Audition classes will vary in length from 1.5 hours to 2 hours. Please check your audition schedule for more information.
Am I required to prepare a variation in advance?
You do not need to prepare a variation unless otherwise specified.
Who will be adjudicating my audition?
School of Philadelphia Ballet auditions are taught and adjudicated by SPB faculty and artistic leadership.
When will I hear the results from my audition? Audition results for Summer Program auditions will be emailed within two (2) weeks of evaluation, beginning January 1st. PBII results are sent on a rolling basis through April.
Audition results for School Year program auditions will be emailed within two (2) weeks of evaluation. Please note that dancers submitting a video audition may be required to attend an in-person class for level placement.
Do you accept walk-in auditions?
While advanced registration is preferred, walk-in auditions are permitted if capacity allows. Please note that cash is not accepted.
How do I update or correct information I already submitted (photos, documents, etc.)?
When should I arrive for my audition?
Audition check-in begins 30 minutes before each audition group. Please note the arrival instructions for your audition provided via email.
I’m unable to attend a live audition. Can I submit a video instead?
Yes! Dancers unable to attend a live audition are encouraged to submit a video for consideration. For detailed video audition guidelines, please visit the appropriate audition page. To change your audition method, please contact the School Office at [email protected].
What happens if I cannot make the audition anymore?
If you have a last-minute conflict, please email the School Office at [email protected] to reschedule or submit a video for consideration. Please note that audition registration fees are non-refundable.
Can I attend a trial class before the program begins?
Trial classes are available for dancers accepted to our school year programs. For more information, please contact the School Office at [email protected].
I’m attending a summer program at School of Philadelphia Ballet and want to be considered for the School Year program. Do I need to register for an audition?
Students attending School of Philadelphia Ballet’s summer programs may elect to be considered for SPB’s school year programs during the registration process. Dancers who wish to be considered will be evaluated during their summer intensive classes.
Do you accept international students?
School of Philadelphia Ballet does not accept international students at this time.
