Join us for Philadelphia Ballet’s first Dance Legends Masterclass with Debra Austin!
Philadelphia Ballet’s Community Education & Public Programs is excited to introduce a free monthly masterclass series for local high school dancers. This series will offer high level dance education and exposure to multiple genres and techniques from Philadelphia Ballet company members, alumni, and other notable dancers. Students in the program will greatly benefit not only from the training offered by esteemed instructors, but connections to the wider dance industry and valuable opportunities for growth as young artists.
About Debra Austin
Debra Austin received a scholarship to the School of American Ballet when she was 12 years old. Four years later, George Balanchine personally invited her to join New York City Ballet, where she performed many principal roles in works choreographed by Balanchine. She later joined the Zurich Ballet in Switzerland, where she danced principal roles (many with Rudolf Nureyev) in works by all of the major choreographers. After her return to the United States, she joined Pennsylvania Ballet (now Philadelphia Ballet) as a principal dancer under Artistic Director Robert Weiss. Ms. Austin retired from the stage in 1990 and since 1997, she’s been passing on her knowledge as Ballet Master at Carolina Ballet.
